Subject: Sexual Risk Avoidance Education for PARENTS and/or ADULTS working with youth
For twelve years Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland, REAL
Choices Outreach Programs, has been sharing sexual risk avoidance education
in our community through parent previews and student presentations. For
twelve years, parent exit surveys have called out to us, “This information
is fantastic… Where do I start? How do I begin. Where do I begin?” The
Medical Institutes for Sexual Health (MISH) and World Vision, through a
grant from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), has developed a dynamic
course addressing those needs. This course is Building Family Connections.Building Family Connections is an exceptionally unique parenting course in
that it promotes parent-child communication about sexual health issues and
abstinence. Every parent wants their child to be SAFE, SMART and STRONG.
This course increases parenting adults-youth communication and
connectedness; increases the number of parenting adults who discuss sexual
health and abstinence with youth and improve the health of youth by
postponing the ages of first sexual encounter.College of Southern Maryland has generously sponsored this unique program in
their Community Education Spring 2015 Evening Life Skills offerings. They
see the value and need for this information/education as we have for twelve
years.We are grateful to CSM for the opportunity to share this vital information
with parents and educators of the tri county area. We look forward to
working and learning together to empower our parents and youth with safe,
healthy living by communicating objective and scientific sexual health
