QUESTION: When should I have My A/C Checked?
Answer for our Southern MD Drivers:
Basically, if you are staying cool in your vehicle your AC is doing ok and it doesn’t need a check-up. Interior air blowing out from the vents, is only required to be 10 degrees Fahrenheit different than outside temperature. Although, usually if probed with a thermometer the air will be between 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit coming from your vents depending on the type of Freon and if the car is idling or moving 50-60 mph with A/C in re-circulate mode.
On a hot summer day when you enter your vehicle, be sure to roll all the windows down for about 5 minutes to allow all the hot air to disperse from the inside of your vehicle, then turn the AC on, roll up the windows and you’ll stay cool, if the AC is functioning properly.
Hence, if you are not staying cool inside your vehicle, your AC needs to be checked. Typically, every 4-5 years the AC needs to be re-charged with pure Freon and oil to swell the seals and gaskets. The procedure for this service involves evacuating the AC system for 45 minutes first, then checking for leaks both visually and electronically and performing vacuum & pressure tests on the complete AC system (condenser, evaporator, compressor, hoses, etc).
